La Porte, IN – The Trinity International Men's Basketball Team nearly claimed a victory in an away game against the Purdue North Central Panthers, but a ball blindly lobbed by the Panthers' Mario Herron found it's way to the net just as the buzzer sounded, breaking the 60-60 tie for a Trojan loss, 60-62.
The Trojans played a breathtaking first half, leading by eight points at one time. The lead would change only once in the first half, the result of a Panther run beginning with back-to-back 3 pointers. The Panthers led only by two, and the Trojans were once again able to take over at the end of the half, bringing the score to a nail-biting 37-35.
The start of the second half looked promising for the Trojans, as they continued to build upon their lead, pushing a 52-41 lead in the 13th minute of the half. The Trojan defense lost some momentum, and allowed the Panthers to go on a run of their own, tying the score 56-56 with six minutes to go.
With a nerve-wracking four seconds on the clock, the Panthers were in possession. Panthers' player Kyle Sanders attempted a 3-pointer, and missed, and the rebound was grabbed by the Trojans who took the ball down the court. The moment that followed shocked the Trojans, as the Panthers' Mario Herron came around and stole the ball, blindly launching it into the air as the buzzer sounded. The ball bounced off the backboard, and through the net, just as time expired.
This is the second loss to Purdue North Central for the Trojans, though this was a much closer game. It is no doubt that the Trojans will be charged for their next home game against Calumet College of St. Joseph on January 28th.
