The TIU Lady Trojans ended their three game Conference losing streak by beating Holy Cross University tonight 87-85 in a thriller.
In the first half, Trinity exchanged baskets with Holy Cross as the lead went back and forth multiple times. With TIU trailing 36-42, Trinity played tough defense and capitalized on fast break points and took a 9-0 run into halftime leading 45-42.
In the second half, The Lady Trojans forced some passes which resulted in turnovers and Holy Cross took advantage of them and TIU found themselves in a deep hole trailing by 9 68-77 with just over six minutes to play.
A technical foul by Holy Cross with 5:54 on the clock seemed to give the Lady Trojans new life as
Latrice Wickley (JR Chattanooga, TN) would hit both free throws which slowly gave TIU momentum. With Trinity down 83-85 with just 36 seconds to play, Christina Swangim (JR Chetek, WI) hit a 15 foot jumper to tie it at 85-85.
Clarissa Woodard (SO Kokomo, IN) then grabbed a rebound off of a miss by Holy Cross with 16 seconds left and passed it to Brittany Simon (JR Clinton Township, MI) who dribbled the length of the court between three defenders and calmly layed it up with 3 seconds on the clock putting the Lady Trojans ahead for good at 87-85. In their next possession, Holy Cross turned the ball over on their inbound pass and TIU ran out the remaining three seconds.
Simon had game high 25 points, Woodard added 15 points and Rudie Denson (SR Stone Mountain, GA) chipped in with 12.
