DEERFIELD, IL - The Trinity International University football team suffered a hard fought defeat at home versus St. Ambrose University 17 - 9.

The St. Ambrose University Bee's wasted no time in getting the scoring started with a 55 yard pass from Danny Tharp to Jacob Rohde on the first play of the game. The Trojan defense pulled themselves together quickly and only allowed 48 more yards the rest of the first half of play. TIU had great field position in the second quarter with three drives starting in SAU territory. The TIU Trojans finally struck with 2:30 to go before half with a 7 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Beals (SO Chicago, IL) to Wide Receiver Nigel Pinson (SO Chicago, IL). Pinson made a spectacular catch in the back corner of the endzone. The first half ended in a 7 to 7 tie.

The Trojans started with the ball to open the second half of play. After a Trinity punt the Bee's proceeded to march down the field for their second touchdown of the day. The touchdown was scored by Brandon Heard on a 3 yard run. The teams then dug themselves in for the rest of the third quarter. The score remained 14 to 7 SAU at the end of the third quarter of action. The Bee's where able to stick on a field goal at the 10:26 mark in the fourth quarter. The scoring for the day ended on a punt snap over the punters head by St. Ambrose University which resulted in a safety for the Trojans.

For the second week in a row TIU's defense played great football. The stifling defense only allowed 21 yards rushing on 25 attempts. The leading tacklers for the Trojan defense were Tyler Boblit (SR Fullerton, CA) and Senuell Smith (JR Bolingbrook, IL). Shawn Sweet (JR Oakland, CA) came up big in the Trojan secondary with 2 interceptions on the day. Kyle Mowen (SO Omond Beach, FL) and Stephen Scott (SO Fort Wayne, IN) combined for 4 tackles for loss (-34 yards) for the stellar Trojan defense. Defensive Coordinator Josh Tooley had this to say after the game, "I am very proud of the defensive effort today. Though we did not get the win, we played extremely well and never stopped fighting. We are never satisfied and are motivated to be even better next week"

Offensively the Trojans were lead by quarterback Daniel Beals 45 yards rushing and 83 yards passing. Nigel Pinson had 47 yards receiving on 2 catches for one touchdown on the day. Stephen Lockhart (Chicago, IL) had 50 combined yards between rushing and receiving on the day.

On a special teams note, Jason Owens did a great job punting today for the Trojans in very windy conditions. St. Ambrose was not able to return any punts today.

"We didn't take advantage of good field position in the first half and that came back to bite us. We played great defense and fought hard on both sides of the ball. I'm proud of the never give up attitude of the team," said Head Coach Kirk Wherritt.

The Trinity International University football team plays their next game September 11th, at 6:00 PM at St. Xavier University.
