The men played a hard fought game against the St. Francis Cougars that couldn't be decided in regulation play. The first half ended in a 0 - 0 tie. In the second half, the tie was quickly broken when Vasily Giannakopoulos scored on a penalty kick five minutes into play.
The very windy conditions played into the favor of the Cougars in the second half. TIU wanted to play the ball on the ground, but only had pockets of opportunities to do so. The Trojans were able to hold St. Francis off for most of the half. Then, with 15 minutes left in regulation, the cougars scored off of a corner kick.
Regulation ended in a 1 -1 tie which sent the game into overtime. The overtime period was short-lived because V. Giannakopoulos scored his second goal of the game four minutes into play to give the Trojans a 2 - 1 win.
After the game, Associate Head Coach Kelvin Tohme commented, "We really gutted out this win. The guys never gave up in spite of everything against us."
The Trojans will play game two of the tournament against Indiana Institute of Technology tomorrow at 4 p.m.
