DEERFIELD, IL - The Trinity International University football team open their 2010 season with a home win against Iowa Wesleyan College 16-6.
TIU's defense played great football all day long allowing only 57 yards rushing on 26 attempts. The defense forced 5 turnovers, 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Senuell Smith (JR Bolingbrook, IL) had a fumble recovery and an interception. Quadrez Reese (JR Warrenton, GA) and Dominique Rogers (SO Plano, TX) also had interceptions in the game. Jawon Spivery (SO Maywood, IL) had the other fumble recovery for the Trojans. Stephen Scott (SO Fort Wayne, IN) harassed the IWC quarterback all day and ended up with 2 sacks. Leading tackler on the day for the Trojan defense was Shawn Sweet (JR Oakland, CA) with 7 tackles. "Our defense was physical and relentless. They were put in some tough positions and didn't give in" said 1st year Head Coach Kirk Wherritt.

Offensively the Trojans were led by Cole Bamberger's (SR Rockford, IL) 94 yards rushing versus an Iowa Wesleyan defense that was packing the box. The TIU scoring was started with a 20 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter by Jason Owens. This was followed up by a 30 yard touchdown run by quarterback Daniel Beals (SO Chicago, IL). Beals rushed for 63 yards and threw for 72 yards on the day. Trinity's last score of the day was by Bryson Lewis (JR Jeanerette, LA) on a 5 yard run. "We stuck with the game plan on offense and they really came together during the 2nd half" said Coach Wherritt.

On a special teams note, Michael Knight (FR Mobile, AL) blocked an Iowa Wesleyan field goal attempt in the 2nd quarter of the game. This was a big momentum changer in the game.

Iowa Wesleyan scored with a little over 2 minutes to go in the game on a 1 yard run.
