DEERFIELD - On Wednesday, June 9th 2010, TIU graduate Pete Miller was drafted in the 40th round of the MLB Amateur Draft by the Detroit Tigers. Pete had just recently graduated from TIU after getting the big news. Talk about a big time graduation present!  Pete hit for an average of .333 with 4 homeruns and 35 runs batted in for the Trojans during the 2010 season.

"When I found out I was taken, it felt like a weight was lifted and I was able to get a foot in the door of professional baseball," said Miller who knew a few teams and scouts had taken an interest to him. He knows he has a long road ahead of him though as getting drafted, "was the easy part." A few days after the draft Miller flew down to Lakeland, Florida to sign a minor league contract with the Gulf Coast League Tigers. This is the lowest level of professional baseball in the United States, but every great player has to start somewhere. He is currently living in the TigerTown Complex where he says, "It's like a college dorm set up with all the facilities located within walking distance."

As for Miller's goals in the Road to the Big Leagues? "Hopefully my performance and work ethic will show through to the organization, and maybe I will get a chance to get bumped up." The Tigers levels include, the Gulf Coast League Tigers (which is the team Miller plays for now), the Connecticut Tigers (Low A), the Western Michigan Whitecaps (Mid A), Lakeland Flying Tigers (Advanced A), Erie Seawolves (Double A), Toledo Mudhens (Triple A), and the last stop with the Detroit Tigers (MLB).

Miller knows he has a long road to travel and hopes "One day to get the call to sign a Major League contract, but that is way out of the picture at this moment."

All of the community here at TIU prays for the best for Pete and wishes him the best on his new and exciting journey.

Pete and his team have already opened the season on Monday June 21. If you would like to follow Pete and his road to the Majors, you can go to http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/clubs/ip_index.jsp?sid=milb&cid=t473
