DEERFIELD, IL- The Trinity International University men's baseball team got the best of the St. Xavier Cougars winning 2 out of 3 games in the past two days. This included the Trojans winning their home opener, 4-2.
The Trojans split their double header the previous day at St. Xavier winning 9-8 and losing 9-1. TIU came back to Deerfield for their home opener and delivered a big win against the #24 ranked Cougars, 4-2.
Trinity scored first in the bottom of third with an RBI single to center field by William Smith (JR Arlington Heights, IL). This was followed by another RBI single driven by Phil Sims (SR Waukegan, IL) to right field. TIU had the lead 2-0
The Cougars would answer in the fifth with a pair of runs tying the score, 2-2. Matt Mueller (SR Burbank, IL) would score off of a TIU error and another run would be batted in off a double by John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, IL).
The Trojans would immediately answer the Cougars attack with a SAC-fly by Sims to right field, giving the Trojans the lead 3-2.
TIU would be able to finish St. X in the seventh inning with another SAC-fly by Kevin Tenney (JR San Diego, CA). This added to the Trojans lead, 4-2 and would be the score at the conclusion of the contest.
Saint Xavier and Trinity International both had 8 hits for the game. St. X pitcher Joe Branigan (JR Plainfield, IL) had four strike outs compared to TIU pitcher Owen Leflar's (SR Edmonton, Canada) two. Leflar would get the W giving the Trojans a 12-6 record and going 2-1 in conference play.
Trinity International plays again March 22nd at 1:00 PM on the road against Indiana University North West..
