The team after their first win of the season

Tucson, AZ- In Day 2 of play at the Tucson Invitational Tournament, the Lady Trojans defeated Sienna Heights, but come up short against University of Great Falls and Hope International University.

TIU Softball took the field vs. Sienna Heights at 11am on Saturday morning.  They battled well and came up with their first win of the season with a game-ending double to left center from senior Whitney Folven to drive in freshman Jenna Depa in the bottom of the seventh.  Sophomore Niki Eisenberg added to the team's offensive efforts with a three-run home run in the bottom of the 5th, with sophomore Carrie Lee and Jenna Depa on base.  Depa hit .750 and Folven hit .500 while accumulating 3 RBI's.

The second game of the day brought the University of Great Falls to the field.  Again, the Trojans put up a valiant effort, but again fell short, losing 7-2 in the contest.  In the top of the fourth, Eisenberg started the rally with a double to the outfield.  Battling through a full count, Folven walked to set the stage for Weisensel.   Now with runners on first a second, Weisensel ripped a single moving Eisenberg and Folven into scoring position for the Trojans.  With bases loaded, Stephanie Johnson drove the first pitch to right field to score what would be the Trojans only runs of the game.  Tara Faulker was 2 for 4, hitting .500 and Brittany Weisensel was 2 for 3, hitting .667 for the game.

The last game of the day began at 6pm vs. Hope International University, and was the first game the Trojans experienced this season under the lights.  The Trojans took the early lead and maintained it until the 3rd inning.  Then, the Royals of Hope International tied the game.  In the top of the 5th,  Hope scored 4 runs, holding a 5-1 lead until TIU's Niki Eisenberg crushed a ball deep over the left field fence, for her second home run of the day.  That home run brought the Trojans within 3, but the score would remain at 5-2 to end the game.  Carrie Lee hit 2 for 4 (.500) and Brittany Weisensel hit 2 for 3 (.667) for the game.

TIU Softball will resume play in Tucson on Monday, March 8 at 4pm vs. Jamestown University, and 6pm vs. Northwestern College.
