Despite double doubles from Patrick Atkins (JR Chicago, IL) and Ignus Verbus (JR, Lithuania) the Trojans could not overcome 32% shooting night from the floor as they fell to the top team in the CCAC 72-53.
DEERFIELD IL - The highly ranked Cardinal Stritch Wolves came to town to take on the upset minded Trojans. The first half was a very tightly contested matchup as the Trojans came out with an intesified focus. There were six lead changed through the first 10 minutes of the game as defense led the way for both teams. Each team was forced to put up tightly contested shots on every possesion as the two teams played with extra intensity fueled by a long standing rivalry.
With 8:40 left to go in the first half Atkins knocked down 2 of his 14 points on the night to give the Trojans a 14-11 lead. From that point on however, the Wolves would go on a 11-1 run to take their the lead 22-15. The lead would stay between 5-8 for the rest of the half as with 1:33 remaining Verbus knocked down a jumper to close the lead to 6 as time expired. Verbus would finish the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Trojans came out of the half and quickly cut the lead down to three at 34-31. However, the wolves would answer with a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 13 points. The Trojans would cut the lead back to single digits with 11:37 remaining but that would be as close as they would get. Foul Trouble would plague the Trojans the rest of the way as 4 of TIU's 5 starters had 3 fouls or more.
Back to back 9-0 and 10-0 runs would put the nail in the Trojans coffin as their staunch defense was unable to make up for their poor shooting night. In the end it was the Trojans falling shot of the top team in the conference 72-53.
