DEERFIELD, IL- The Trinity International University men's basketball team begin 2010 with a victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Trojans snap their losing streak with a decisive win at home 99-76.
Meyers Sports Complex held a very exciting match between the Trojans and Crimson wave basketball teams. Ignas Verbus (JR Vilnius, Lithuania) lead the Trojans with a double-double scoring 33 points and bringing down 11 rebounds.
Four other Trojan players scored in double digits including Carson Chapman (SO Yorba Linda, CA), Danny Kirst (SR Galena, IL), Patrick Atkins (JR Chicago, IL), and Tyrone Smith (JR Detroit, MI). The Crimson Wave included notable efforts from Antonio Hurt with 23 points and Wilfredo Escobar scoring 10 points.
The first half was lead by TIU in the begining but would be continuously contested by calumet throughout the half. The lead would change hands once or twice but Calumet would take over with 2:00 minutes remaining till the break. The Crimson Wave would outscore the Trojans 12-22 in the paint during the first half and have a 8-point lead at halftime 35-43.
The Trojans would bounce back from halftime with only victory on their minds. In the 15th minute Atkins, Chapman, and Smith would take over giving the Trojans the lead on a Chapman 3-pointer. Atkins and Smith would combine for some passionate fast break combination points and memorable long 3-point shots.
Verbas would also come out big from long range going 6-11 for the game and at one point giving the Trojans and commanding lead, 74-55 knocking down a three from well outside the 3-point arc.
The Trojans played their hearts out the second half, out-shooting the Crimson Wave in both field goals and 3-point field goals 30.8% to 59.5% and 33.3% to 52.9% respectively. With their precision shooting and all around outstanding team performance the second half the Trojans cruised to victory over the Crimson Wave 99-76.
The Trinity International University Trojans look to repeat thier efforts on the road against Purdue North Central Wednesday January 13th, in Whiting, Indiana at 7:30 pm.
