ELGIN, IL - As kickoff approached, the precipitation let up for TIU's NCCAA North Central Regional soccer match against Judson, however, the Eagles rained on the Trojans chances for a National Tournament berth, 3-2.
The Eagles came out with high intensity and an attacking presence. The Eagles created several scoring opportunities and put the first goal on the board 20 minutes into the game when Tatum Teevans passed a ball past the Trinity defense onto the feet of senior, Christina Thorton, who put it away nicely.
Less than 5 minutes later TIU answered back. Sophomore, Diana Anderson, dribbled past an Eagle defender to the end line and passed the ball to forward, Niki Sigurdson, who shot the ball past the Eagle goalkeeper.
Intensity was leveled and both teams continued to battle hard. Halftime came and the scores were tied, 1-1.
The second half began with a higher intensity from TIU. Momentum shifted at various points as both teams had spurts of winning the aerial challenges and possessing in the midfield. With 20 minutes left in the game, a Judson player crossed the ball into the 18-yard box. Thornton was on the end of it to flick the ball into the back of the Trojan net for her second goal of the game. Trinity answered back again with 14 minutes left in the game when Michelle Renaud served an early bending ball around the Eagle defense. Rachel Bowker was there to redirect the ball and freshman, Becky Svehla connected to put the ball in the net to tie the game 2-2.
Both teams continued to battle it out as the end of their seasons were at stake. However, neither team scored and the game was sent into overtime.
The Judson Eagles sealed the deal when a Judson Eagle won an aerial battle which found the feet of Christina Thornton near the top of the 18-yard box. Thornton was first to the ball and got in past the TIU defense and keeper to put the ball away for her 3rd goal of the game. The Eagles advance with a 3-2 win and will play at Olivet Nazarene University for the NCCAA regional championship on Saturday, November 21.
The Lady Trojans finished their overall season with a record of 9-10-1.
