TIU recorded their first victory of the season over Holy Cross.
DEERFIELD, IL - Victory never tasted so sweet for the Trojan Men as they defeated the Holy Cross Saints, 1-0.
Kickoff began at 4:00 PM at Shartner Field on a cloudy, cold October day. The Trojan men had yet to win a match all season. However, most onlookers would not be able to tell by the spirit and heart the men continued to bring to the field day after day.
After tough setbacks and heartbreaking losses, the Trojan men were long overdue for a victory.
The beginning of the first half was much like a kickball game between the two squads. However, when the Trojan men brought the ball to the ground and possessed, scoring opportunities opened up.
In the 19th minute of the game right defender, Brad Earnest, dribbled up the flank and crossed the ball to center midfielder, Casey Thompson. Thompson redirected the head beautifully on goal which hit off the top crossbar. Sophomore forward, Vasily Giannakopoulos, was there to tap the ball into the back of the net.
The Trojans entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Holy Cross came out with a higher urgency and enthusiasm to score an equalizer. However, the Trojan defense held a shut out and the team went on to win their first victory of the season!
The Trojan men will resume play on Friday, October 16, at 4:00 PM against St Francis.
