OSKALOOSA, IA - The young Trojan football team traveled to Oskaloosa, IA on Saturday in hopes of their first win of the season.  The Trojans looked to build on last seasons heart breaking 25-24 defeat to the conference runner ups.  However, the Statesmen had other plans as special teams miscues and big plays did in the Trojans as they fell 49-13.

As the game opened in front of a packed crowd the Trojan Defense attempted to set an early tone and recovered a fumble on the first possession.  This put the Trojan offense in good field position on the William Penn 42 yard line.  The Trojan offense however, went three and out and were forced to punt the ball away.  William Penn began their second drive on their own 20 yard line.  One play later the Trojans found themselves down as Skyler Crouch took a pass 80 yards from Ryan Van Dalen for the first score of the game.  The Trojan special teams attempted to take some of the momentum away as they blocked their sixth kick of the season.  However, they were called for a questionable penalty and the Statesmen were given another attempt.  This time, Cam Shearon, put the ball through the uprights and William Penn took a early 7-0 lead.  After the kick return, the Trojans took over on their own 30 yard line.  Three plays later Daniel Beals was intercepted giving William Penn great field position on the Trojans 45 yard line.  On the first play of the drive Penn increased their lead to 14-0 on a Bernard Luster 45 yard pass from Ryan Van Halen.  The Trojans Offense got the ball back on their 31 yard line and went three and out once more.  After the punt, the Statesmen went 61 yards in 6 plays ending on a Ryan Van Dalen 21 yard run to take a 21-0 lead.  Finally, after another Trojan three and out the punt team came on the field and shifted momentum considerably as Jered Flinkman recovered an Andrew Harris fumble deep inside William Penn territory to put the Trojan offense on the 14 yard line going in.  On the next play Daniel Beals put the Trojans on the board with a 14 yard scamper to cut the lead to 21-7.  On the next possession the Statesmen began at their own 30 yard line and went 70 yards in 3 plays when on 3rd and 3 Ryan Van Dalen ran the mid-line for a 63 yard TD run.  The Trojans next possession was once again a three and out and on 4th down Gustavo Marquez took a blocked punt 22 yards for a William Penn touchdown.  At the end of the first quarter the damage was severe as William Penn led the Trojans 35-7.

The second quarter was more of the same for the Trojans as the Statesmen scored on their next two possessions including a 9 play 97 yard drive and a 2 play 16 yard drive.  The Trojans on the other hand had a long drive the ended on downs and another three and out.  At the end of the first half, the game had been put out of reach as William Penn held a 49-7 advantage.

The second half was a different story as the Trojans played with a lot of heart and never quit no matter what the score.  The Defense forced two turnovers and constantly put the offense in good field position.  The Offense on the other hand held the ball for 19 out of the 30 minutes in the second half and added another score on a 10 play 75 yard drive capped off by a 29 yard TD pass from Daniel Beals to Dave Hardt.  The extra point was wide left but the Trojans had cut the lead to 49-13.  That would cap the scoring for the game as the Trojans would threaten two more times inside the red zone but turned the ball over on downs both times.  As the game ended it was William Penn 49 TIU 13.

William Penn's Ryan Van Dalen had 5 Touchdowns on the day 3 in the air and 2 on the ground as the Trojans struggled to stop the option attack.

Daniel Beals accounted for both Trojan touchdowns, one in the air and one on the ground.  Daniel ran for 60 yards on 13 carried and was not sacked.  Clif Johnson also added 43 yards on 15 carries.  Dave Hardt lead the way for the Trojans receiving corps as he had 3 catches for 37 yards and a touchdown. Defensively Pete Miller led the way with 5 solo tackles while Tyler Boblit had 2 tackles for loss and Jered Flinkman had 2 fumble recoveries.

The Trojans will next be in action back in Deerfield at Leslie Frazier Field on Saturday October 3rd at 1:00PM.
