Trinity International (0-3, 0-1 MSFA) was handed a lopsided 51-3 loss as they hosted the Cougars of St. Xavier for their 2009 home opener.
The Trojans came into their third game of the season with high hopes of upsetting their old Chicago rival, St Xavier University. With a new freshman QB, Daniel Beals, at the helm the Trojans hoped to kick start their struggling offense and recapture the magic from the first half of the previous week.
St. X had very different plans as the Cougars came out strong marching the ball downfield on the first possesion of the game and scoring on a Donnie Selvy 9 yard touchdown run. After holding the Trojan offense to a three and out the Cougars marched right back down the field scoring this time on a KJ Franklin 22 yard touchdown run. On the extra point, in an attempt to swing momentum, the Trojans field goal block team forced their third miss of the season. But, after another Trojan punt the Cougars scored for the third time in the first quarter with a 12 yard pass from Anthony Kropp to Joe Coiaa. Once again the Trojan field goal block team put pressure on the kick as George Odicho got a hand on the ball but as it did most of the day, the ball bounced St. Xavier's way and the extra point still found its way through the uprights. After quickley going down 20-0 the Trojans needed to find a way to swing momentum. Finally after another Trojan punt the ST. X offense came on the field to try and bury the young TIU team. However, on the third play of the series Tyler Boblit ripped the ball out of KJ Franklin's grasp giving the Trojans some signs of life and the offense good field position. Trojans offense responded by marching the ball 44 yards in 12 plays keyed by mutiple first down scrambles by Daniel Beal but had to settle for a Josiah Schillinger 36 yard field goal, the first of his Trojan career. That would be the lone bright spot in the first half, as the Cougars added three more touchdowns and shut down the Trojan offense. At halftime the St. X had a commanding 41-3 lead.
The second half began with more of the same as the Trojans went three and out on their first two possessions while St. X scored on their first two possesions. A 68 yard touchdown pass from Joe Rizzi to Shane Zachary accounted for their first score and a 22 yard AJ Nichols field goal finished the scoring and increased the lead to 51-3. The teams would exchange punts the rest of the game, as both teams began to play the backups, and the score would remain 51-3 for the rest of the game. In the end the highly ranked more experienced St. Xavier team was just too much for the young Trojans.
On the positive side for the Trojans, Pete Miller increased his team lead in tackles with 9 solo tackles on the day giving him 22 for the season which ranks 4th in the conferance. Isaiah Washington had the longest run of the game and his short career for the Trojans with a 15 yard scamper breaking a tackle from pre season All-American Mike Lally. Daniel Beals completed 14 of his 23 passes for a 61% completion rating.
The Trojans next take on Waldrof College on September 19 at 1:00PM at Leslie Frazier Field for homecoming.
