Sep 6 - With a distant sky of  smoke from fires in the Southern California area, TIU women's soccer faced its own firestorm of goals in two lopsided defeats this weekend.

TIU traveled to Riverside, CA as part of the California Baptist University Tournament played Friday and Saturday.  The tournament field featured TIU, Menlo College, #4 ranked Azusa Pacific University, and #8 ranked California Baptist, who just a week ago, beat the #1 and #3 ranked teams on back to back days.

It was these CBU Lady Lancers who would open play for Trinity, a game played on their home field.   It did not take the Lancers long to get rolling as Joanna Idon scored in the 13th minute as she worked her goal from a box surrounded by TIU defenders.  It took just five minutes later for Fabiola Zanella da Silva to beat keeper Rebekah Niedermayer (Jr., Buffalo Grove, IL) and make the score 2-0 CBU.

Kylee Nicasso would then net a cross from teammate Eva Solis in the 25th minute followed by an Amanda Lammers goal 15 minutes later off an assist by Courtney Sewell.  The half ended with TIU down 4-0, and having just one shot on goal.

Though the 2nd half would bring a bit more organization to the Lady Trojan attack with another shot on goal, the Lancers were just too much to overcome and netted two additional goals, one off the foot of Britney Quiroz and the other from Lizzy Bendrick.  The 90 minute buzzer ended  with a 6-0 loss.

CBU outshot TIU 16-2.  Niedermayer had 10 saves, while TIU middle fielder Samantha VanDenack (So., Hastings, MI) and Forward Becky Dean (Sr., Antioch, IL) had one shot on goal apiece.

While the Lady Trojans ran into a balanced attack on Friday, they would run into a Broad one on Saturday against Azusa Pacific University.  APU forward Theresa Broad scored her first five goals of the 2009 season handing TIU a 6-0 defeat.

After an opening goal by Jacqueline Conforto in the 4th minute, Broad netted a hat trick in the first half with goals in the 11th, 19th and 31st minutes.  The half would end with the Lady Trojans down 4-0.

Broad continued her scoring in the 2nd half with two more goals, the first off an assist by Conforto in the 68th minute and the other in the 80th minute when Lavin fed Broad over the TIU defense.

APU finished with 14 shots on goal while Trinity was unable to record a single shot.  Niedemayer tallied 8 saves.

The Lady Trojans will be off until September 19 when they host Spring Arbor University as part of Homecoming Weekend.  The game is set for a 1:00 start CST.
