Apr 28 - Junior Owen Leflar (Edmonton, AB, Canada) scattered three hits over 8 innings and Scott Lawson (Peoria, IL) drove in the only run of the game to beat St. Francis 1-0. TIU lost the nightcap 9-0.
Leflar extended his winning streak to two games by shutting down a potent St. Francis offense. Though the Saints threatened in the 2nd, 4th, and 8th, Leflar stranded 7 baserunners over that time. None, however, were bigger than a two out strikeout of Steve Kehr with a runner on third to end the game. Said Coach Raven, "He (Kehr) is a very aggressive hitter, so we choose to throw downward moving pitches low in the strike zone. That final pitch was a curveball 3 inches below the knees that Owen got him to chase on. A great pitch in a clutch time."
Though the TIU offense had several opportunities to score over the course of the game, they found themselves 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position through seven innings. But in the 8th that changed. Kyle Keller (Baton Rouge, LA) led off with a single to rightcenter field. Dave Hardt (Des Plaines, IL) then layed down a scarifice bunt to move Keller into scoring position. Lawson, the leading hitter in the CCAC, then singled up the middle to score Keller. Though the Trojans added a couple more base runners, Lawson was throw out at the plate on a sacrfice fly attempt to end the half inning.
In Game 2, the TIU defense allowed 7 errors to plate 8 unearned runs to sink the Trojans 9-0. "It was not our prettiest performance in that second game," said Head Coach Tom Raven.
With the split the Trojans move to 10-24 on the season and have won 5 of their last 7. They return to action on Wednesday, April 29 with a home game against Cardinal Stritch. TIU swept CSU in a doubleheader last week, 17-0 and 8-6. Gametime is set for 3:30.
