Apr 24 - With a 25 mph wind blowing straight in from centerfield, Trinity International was able to hold Calumet to just three hits and no runs.
Senior Caleb Johnson (Elk Grove) pitched 7 scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season. "Caleb told me early that he didn't have his best stuff, which makes is all the more remarkable how well he battled to keep them (Calumet) scoreless," said Head Coach Tom Raven. The Crimson Wave only managed to get one ball to the outfield grass.
Trojan 1st baseman Phil Sims (Waukegan, IL) got TIU on the board in the 4th inning with a lead off homerun to right centerfield, his fourth of the week. Said Raven, "to hit one out into that wind showed how crushed that ball was." Pete Miller (Chicago, IL) followed with a walk and Stephen Bradner (New city, AZ) lined a single down the first base line putting runners at first and third. Myles Koebel (Surrey BC, Canada) grounded out to short, scoring Miller to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Though Johnson worked himself into a bit of trouble in the 7th inning, we was able to strike out Ken Tipman with runner at first and third to end the threat. Nate Alvarado (Kaneohe, HI) came on to pitch the 8th. After a walk and error would get runners to first and second with one out, Alvarado would get the next batter to ground into a 1-4-3 double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 8th, Dave Hardt (Des Plaines, IL) walked with one out. After a Scott Lawson (Campaign, IL) strikeout, Sims walked to place runners at first and second. With a one and one count, Miller lined a base hit up the middle to score Hardt and win TIU a 3-0 lead.
Alvarado pitched a strong ninth to preserve the win and earn his first save.
With the win, TIU moved to 8-22 on the season. The Trojans will return to action on Saturday, April 25 with a doubleheader against Calumet. The games will be played at Calumet High School and begin at noon.
