Feb. 28 - The Wolves opened up a big first half lead that proved too much for the Lady Trojans in the Women's CCAC Championship game Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stritch University upending Trinity by a score of 80-71.
Trinity was never able to overcome the quick start of the Wolves. Cardinal Stritch came out red hot knocking down 8 of 13 three pointers in the first half and going 8 of 9 from the line. The Trojans shot a very respectable 41% from the floor in the opening frame but found themselves down 50-34 at halftime. After the break Trinity began to slowly chip away at Stritch's lead behind a swarming defensive effort. With six and a half minutes remaining the score stood 71-60 in favor of Stritch. The Lady Trojans then came up with a 9-2 run that placed the score at 73-69 with just under two minutes to go. It appeared that the tide had turned but the Wolves would not go down so easily. Stritch hit 6 consecutive free throws in the last minute and a half to put the game away for good. The Wolves came away with the Women's CCAC Tournament Championship by a score of 80-71.
Free throws proved to be the deciding factor in the game with Stritch hitting 20 of 23 for an incredible 87%, The Trojans meanwhile only found themselves at the stripe twice all game finishing 4 of 4.
The Lady Trojans put up a great team effort with 4 players scoring in double figures. Reanna Perera led TIU with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Jonkea Stewart-Butler added 15 points and 7 assists while Vivianne Kindt and Melanie Duplessis chipped in with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Trinity International will now turn its attention to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) regional tournament to be played next weekend.
