Nov. 21 - The Lady Trojan volleyball team saw their season come to an end today with a straight game loss to Trinity Christian College in the opening game of the NCCAA North Central Region Tournament.
"Though we did not come away with the victory, I saw several girls play solid today. We just were not able to play excellent," said Head Coach Jill Rokosik.
TIU opened the first game with a lead over the host TCC Trolls. They held that lead a few points longer when the Troll offense started to gel and go on a run that saw the TIU 9-8 lead turn to a deficit of 15-9. Though the two teams would trade points over the next several plays, the TCC lead would prove too tough and end in a 25-17 loss for the Lady Trojans.
In game two the TIU women again jumped to an early lead of 3-1 before TCC was able to start finding the floor with the ball and jumped out to a 15-10 lead. This time, however, the Trojan ladies would dig deep and mount a comeback knotting the game at 16-16. The two teams would again trade points for a few plays till it stood at a 23-22 TCC lead. But that is as close at TIU would get and the Trolls finished of the final two points, both on tips at the net for a 25-22 game two win.
Game three opened with TIU getting into a 3-0 hole before they rallied for a 8-7, then 10-8 lead. Freshman outside hitter Tayler Arseneau led the way in kills to help the Trojans grab the momentum. Though they seemed to be clicking when Sophomore Middle Chelsie Shields slammed one down for a 12-11 lead, the swings would go silent letting the TCC women take the lead behind Junior middle Melinda Hegeman. As the game approached a 23-19 deficit for TIU, they pushed hard but would come up short in a 25-20 loss.
The 3-0 loss would end the season for the Lady Trojans, who finished the year at 13-27. They can remain optimistic for the coming 2009 season as they return all but one player (Senior Maggie Jakus) and are well into a solid recruiting class.
